QUÉBEC ACCEPTANCE CERTIFICATE (CAQ) FOR STUDIES

The Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) is required for most international students wanting to study in Québec.

It is not particularly difficult when applying for the CAQ for the first time. You need to get an admission, provide a copy of your passport and pay the immigrations fees. Depending on where you currently live, you may also have to provide financial proofs, but that’s it.

If you already have a CAQ and need to extend or change it, it can get more complicated. For instance, when extending your CAQ, you will need to provide a copy of your official transcripts. If they show that you haven’t studied full-time or have failed many classes, you will have to provide a detained explanation letter and proofs justifying the delay in your studies.

The process can get quite stressful, as not all justifications are accepted and the process is highly discretionary. It is very common to receive an intention to refuse letter from the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI) when justifications are not deemed satisfactory and this can significantly delay the CAQ and study permit renewal process.

Furthermore, if the CAQ application is refused, it would not be possible to extend the study permit.

During the course of my practice, I have witnessed many honest mistakes from students and I believe that everyone should be entitled to a second chance, especially when so much efforts have been invested in pursuing high education in Québec.
